Honda is working on an amazing Disaster Zone Robot HondaE2-DR

In the recent times the spike in the natural and man-made calamities has led to huge loss of life and resources on global scale. We have been continuously reeling under the forces of hurricanes to earthquakes which seriously impact our ability to provide requisite rescue efforts. Robots are better suited to take up the rescue jobs where human intervention isn’t possible at all. Hondo is building a robot on the same grounds named HondaE2-DR which effectively happens to be a bipedal disaster robot.

Unveiling next-gen rescue robot HondaE2-DR

Honda E2-DR almost looks like a transformer from the cinematic movies. HondaE2-DR is a very strong and sturdy robot who is designed to take on challenges in any weather. It measures just 5 and half feet which roughly translates to 1.68 meters and weighs around 187 pounds or 85 kilograms which is light weight considering it’s a bot. Honda E2-DR derives its power from a 1000-Whlithion-ion battery which effectively provides it an operating time frame of 90 minutes.

This robot has five eyes out of which two happens to be Hokuyo laser rangefinders. It also boasts of a monocular camera which comes with a synchronized LED flash for added benefit.  It possess 33 degrees of freedom which allows to move around it environment quite easily without being any unwanted restrictions of movement. The number of single axis rotational joints present in different parts of body are like this 8 per arms, 6per legs, 2 in torso and 1 in hand and head.

Honda E2-DR is built to last so that it works in the extreme condition after any natural disaster with ease and perfection. Apart from being dustproof and splash proof it also has the ability to work in the extreme temperatures in between 14 to 104 degree Fahrenheit. It isn’t a dumb robot which simply toils around the ground performing the tasks expected of him without giving focus on its own well-being. It has the ability to clean itself while working which ensures that dirt doesn’t get into the gears. Honda stated that this robot comes with a one of a kind ‘segregated cooling structure’ which simply works the fan through the robot’s torso to keep it from overheating.

Future applications of the Honda E2-DR

Honda has unveiled E2-DR at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Vancouver. On the spec sheet HondaE2-DR hits all the right marks and appears to be ready to bat out in the outdoor conditions but Honda hasn’t tested it in any disaster zones yet. Honda E2-DR has to learn to safeguard itself from the environmental challenges like adapting itself against the falling debris which can easily knock it over. Honda E2-DR is highly durable as it can withstand many challenges in the field like falling or getting hit but so far Honda secretive about it exact durability. Honda E2-DR still happens to be a work in progress robot which will be able to perform desirable by 2019.
