Klout has been around since 2008 and measures influence online. If you’re online everyday and active on Twitter, FB or Google + you’ve undoubtedly heard of Klout. There are 100 Million registered Klout users, whether all of them know it or not. While Klout has it’s critics, no one can deny they’ve made an impact on the Social Media landscape in 2011.

I’ve noticed that many of my local friends that find their way to Facebook, Twitter, and Google + a few times a week have no clue about Klout. I usually start with it’s free, and you can get free stuff based on your “influence”. This stuff is called “Perks” in the world of Klout.

Identity Networks You must link to Klout through one of these networks
Twitter
Facebook

Perks (Some that I’ve received)
Dick’s Sporting Goods $50 Gift Certificate
Subway $10 Gift Certificate

Fox Windbreaker (very nice, although was small on me)
Weather Channel Umbrella (quality)

Steve I want to commend you on putting together information about Klout. It is easy to understand for those that do not know anything about Klout. I have to agree that both Jure and yourself make interesting points about Klout.

Although I don't spend a lot of time on Klout (BTW my score is the same as your buddy Tony :) I do see how it can be a social motivator / indicator of such that will help those jumping into social media and wondering how they are doing.

I do like 'giving' the +K's as it is quick, easy and produces good rapport with my followers, those that matter, for my business and industry. So it is a great tool for socially recognizing others in a small way. Nothing beats actually sharing other professionals post, articles or videos though. But still see both sides of the Klout coin!

Nicely done! I think this is a great post especially for those who never heard of Klout. I agree that it remains to be seen how valuable it will be over the long term.

I've been on since it started and gotten some great swag. Not sure the metrics always work but I'm in it for life. :)

Hi Sukhraj - Yes it is a little bit of an inexact science, but its a good measuring stick...

Klout partys are fun too ;-))

Where is my invite? :) Thanks Shannon....

Great post! It's definitely a good idea to register for Klout, even if only for the perks!

I agree with you ... I'm always bragging about Klout and am astonished how many social media geeks aren't on it.

I am a supporter of Klout, as with all great innovation something better will always come along and we can't be concerned how long it will last but use it while it's here.

Thanks Karla...Another thing I like about Klout is that they are always trying to get better. They are not static. There is a change or something new every week it seems.

Love and Hate Klout at the same time!! I am at a klout ceiling at 72/73 - want to get higher! I am OCD that way. LOL

Hi Sally - lol, yes I know how you feel. That 73 has been a roadblock. Keep doing your thing.

I think Klout is a brilliant new innovation. No one yet knows if Klout will survive and thrive, but I applaud them for their thinking outside the box!

Hi Dennis - I agree 100%...I made a prediction about 4 months ago - Klout IPO 2013 :) We'll see....

I'm one of the Facebook and Twitters regulars who hasn't heard of Klout. I'm on my way to check it out right now.

Good to hear Max, you'll enjoy it...

I joined Klout a year ago and I have never really looked into the perks. I think I've been missing something! Thanks for great post.

Thanks for stopping by Gabriella. Yes, the perks are fun. Always interested to what they are going to put out there next...

I've got mixed feelings about Klout. I'm in it and I wish more people would register but I also share some of the feelings with Jure.

Only time will tell how valuable it really is.

Hey Oscar - Yes, time will tell. I think they will continue to improve. This site is looking good, thanks again. Just a couple of tweaks and should be all set.

Hi Jure - Thanks for stopping by with your thoughts. I didn't see the ad, but sounds like it might have been a bit tongue and cheek. You start to get into a grey area with popularity vs. influence. There are many similarities with the two. If you're influential you generally have some level of popularity, and vice versa. We both know the reason why they sell data and advertising. :) The Perks give it the juice. People like getting something for nothing (basically). It's a win for the User, Advertiser, and Klout. Most of the Klout bashing I see comes from people with sub 50 scores, not that they're bad people, but comes off as sour grapes a bit. With your Klout score of 79 there are no sour grapes. I know you have the poms-poms out for KRED. Feel free to reply on KRED if you wish.

Best Regards,
Steve

I agree with you Klout made an impact on landscape of Social Media, IMO not really good one! Considering that Klout has recently advertised on Facebook really tasteless ads, "Would you date someone with lower Klout Score" makes me question who gave them the rights to change the landscape of Social Media ? Again IMO Klout only measure our online activities there is no proven data available that they measure the any kind of influence, clicks, retweets, replays, follows are not signs of influence but more sings of popularity ~ so i would say the do popularity contest. Offering Perks is another ethical questionable step ? Why would someone who measure influence sell data and advertising in first place ? :)
and last but not least, they proclaim themselves Standar for Influence, and they really never give us any proof on standard, neither any Institute of Technology or Science never confirmed their standard. But yes taking into account that many people, potential employers or clients are looking into "influential" Klout score i would say is good to pay some attention, till it last. Great Article for beginners who are looking for info on Klout.

Well said Jure. I think I've read somewhere on Twitter about why would we let such an imperfect system run our lives and that ad about dating is just a turn off.
